Farewell from the Arbella E-book Author: John Winthrop Genre: History / Biography
Winthrop, John (1588-1649) English-born, American Puritan leader and
twelve-time governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was, more than
any other man, the founder of the colony and was influential in shaping
the character of early New England. An earnest Puritan, he argued
against the idea of a democratic government, but was evidently a just,
businesslike governor. He is portrayed fictionally in Hawthorne's "The
Scarlet Letter."
A Farewell from the "Arbella" (1630) In 1630, Winthrop set sail for
America aboard the Arbella. This "Farewell" was written to his wife
from aboard Ship, off Yarmouth. It was while aboard the Arbella that
Winthrop began a journal which he kept faithfully until a few months
before his death that would eventually be published as "A History of
New England."
