Far From the Madding Crowd (1874) Gabriel Oak, a young farmer, proposes to
Bathsheba Everdene; she refuses him and marries Sergeant Troy, a thoughtless
adventurer. When Gabriel loses his farm, he goes to work for Bathsheba.
