Early Anti-Slavery Tract E-book Author: Samuel Sewall Genre: History / Biography, Religion / Mythology / Sacred
Sewall, Samuel (1652-1730) English-born, early American statesman known
for his then liberal views. His famous Diary gives us a glimpse of life
in early Boston. Sewall held a number of political positions in the
Massachusetts colony and presided as a judge at the Salem witchcraft
trials. He later repented in a public confession read to the
congregation at his church.
An Early Anti-Slavery Tract (1700) An excerpt from "The Selling of
Joseph," an early, decidedly religious, anti-slavery tract full of
Biblical quotes and references. Sewall's work offers many arguments
against the practice of owning slaves. To the assertion that the slaves
were "brought out of a Pagan country into places where the gospel is
preached," Sewall answers that "evil must not be done, that good may
come of it."
