Browning, Robert (1812-1899) British Victorian Poet, noted for his
dramatic monologues, his rejection of overly-florid language, and his
mastery of psychological characterization. In 1846 he married Elizabeth
Barrett and shared with her one of the world's most celebrated romances.
Dramatic Lyrics (1842) Published when Robert Browning was
30, three years before he met Elizabeth Barrett whom he would
later marry, "Dramatic Lyrics" contains some of his finest work.
His famous dramatic monologue "Porphyria's Lover," for instance,
first appears here. Like all his other poetic works published over
the next 25 years, "Dramatic Lyrics" sold very poorly.
