Discourse on Political Economy E-book Author: Jean Jacques Rousseau Genre: Government / Economics, Philosophy
Rousseau, Jean Jacques (1712-1778) Swiss-born, French philosopher and
author regarded as the father of French romanticism. Some of Rousseau's
greatest contributions to philosophy were his thoughts on individualism
and rebellion against the established political order.
Discourse on Political Economy (1755)
Discourse on Political Economy was written in 1755 as an article
for the "Encyclopedie" (for which he also wrote the article on
musical notation). In this work, Rousseau compares the public
economy of the government to the natural order of the family and,
typically, finds the former wanting. Rousseau criticizes, among
other things, the government's taxation and military systems, and
also the state's inability to act in the best interest of those
whom it governs.
