Day of Doom E-book Author: Michael Wigglesworth Genre: Literature, Poetry
Wigglesworth, Michael (1631-1705) English-born, American poet,
clergyman and doctor. After graduating from Harvard at the age of
twenty, Wigglesworth went on to work as a Congregational minister
and physician in Malden, Massachusetts. Rev. Wigglesworth was the
most widely read poet of early New England; his subject matter and
style are most representative of his time. With the exception of Anne
Bradstreet, he was the most prolific poet of his time.
The Day of Doom (1662) Considered the first American best seller,
it is estimated that one out of every twenty residents of the
Massachusetts Bay Colony owned a copy of this celebrated poem. It's
full title is "The Day of Doom; or, a Poetical Description of the Great
and Last Judgment." Wigglesworth adds a statement of the Calvinistic
dogma of eternal punishment to this poetical retelling of the biblical
last judgment.
