James, Henry (1843-1916) American novelist and short-story writer who
is known as an artistic literary craftsman. His great themes were the
relationship between innocence and experience and the attainment of
self-knowledge. Brother of William James.
Confidence (1880) Composed during 1879 and 1880, the story follows
the courtship of Bernard Longueville and Angela Vivian. Other
prominent characters include Angela's mother, Mrs. Vivian, as
well as the wealthy Gordon Wright, and Blanche Evers. The story
takes place in Siena, Baden-Baden, New York, Paris and Northern
France, and Egypt.
