Thoreau, Henry David (1817-1862) - American writer, transcendentalist, and
naturalist whose journal was the source of all his writings. Thoreau
published only two books during his lifetime but has since grown to be
regarded as an important literary figure.
Civil Disobedience (1849) - Thoreau's premise is "that government is best
which governs least." This essay would later influence Mahatma Gandhi's
non-resistance doctrine in India.
