Scottish novelist, poet, dramatist, historian, lawyer, and printer.
Master of the historical novel, Sir Walter Scott used incidents
from the history of Scotland as materials for his fictional works.
The most celebrated novelist of his day, his best known novels are
Waverley, The Bride of Lammermoor, Ivanhoe, and Rob Roy. His major
poems include The Lay of the Last Minstrel, Marmion, and The Lady
of the Lake. In 1826, his publishing firm went bankrupt and the
once-wealthy Scott spent his remaining years paying off debts.
Chronicles of the Cannongate (published posthumously, 1896)
This collection contains four works of historical fiction:
Chronicles of the Cannongate, The Highland Widow, The Two Drovers,
and The Surgeons's Daughter. Considerable introductory notes and
historical materials are also included. The Cannongate refers to
Edinburgh's oldest quarter where the ancient castle is located.
