Horatio Alger, Jr., American writer of about ten dozen books for
juvenile boys, was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts and attended
Harvard and, Cambridge Divinity School. In 1864, he was dismissed
from his post at the First Unitarian Church in Brewster, Mass.
after being accused of "unnatural familiarity with boys," whereupon
he left the ministry and moved to New York City where he devoted
most of his life to writing didactic works designed to influence
and inspire young readers. He also wrote a dozen adult novellas.
Cast Upon the Breakers (1893)
First serialized in Argosy Magazine, Cast Upon the Breakers tells
the story of a young man's struggle to rise from poverty to a
respectable middle-class life. This theme of upward mobility
through honesty and hard work is central to the works of Horatio
Alger. His prolific writings were greatly influenced by Benjamin
Franklin's Autobiography and Charles Dickens' social novels.
