Bradford, William (1590-1657) English-born, American statesman who arrived
in the colonies on the Mayflower. Bradford was the governor of the
jurisdiction of Plymouth from 1621 to his death, except for a five year
period during which he refused election. His best-known work, "The History
of Plymouth Plantation," is a chronicle of the events in that colony from
its inception to 1646. For years in the possession of his family, the work
was published in 1856.
Bradford's and Winslow's Journal (1622) Published in London as "A Relation
or Iournall of the beginning and proceedings of the English Plantation
settled at Plymoth in New England, by certain English Adventurers both
Merchants and others." The author of the work was, at the time, unidentified
and the Journal became known as "Mourt's Relation," after G. Mourt, an
unknown individual whose name graced the journal's preface.
