Crane, Stephen (1871-1900) - An American novelist, short-story writer, and
poet who is often called the first modern American writer.
The Black Riders and Other Lines (1895) - A book of free verse. The title
poem was inspired by Crane's boyhood dream of black riders on black horses
rising out of the sea.
