who is best known for his tales of ratiocination, his fantastical horror
stories, and his genre-founding detective stories. Poe, whose cloudy
personal life is a virtual legend, considered himself primarily a poet.
Berenice (1835) - Egaeus opens his cousin Berenice's grave and pulls out
her teeth. Poe was criticized for writing about such a subject and for
trying to elicit a shock response from his readers.
