Balanced Government E-book Author: John Adams Genre: Government / Economics, History / Biography
Adams, John (1735-1826) The second President of the United States.
After graduating from Harvard, Adams was admitted to the bar. The Stamp
Act Crisis of 1765, which he thought to be contrary to the rights of
mankind, drew Adams away from a successful law practice and into
politics. A delegate to the first and second Continental Congress, he
was an impassioned supporter of the Declaration of Independence. Adams
died within a few hours of Thomas Jefferson, on July 4, 1826.
A Balanced Government (1790) An essay addressed to Americans and
Frenchmen alike outlining Adams' definition of a free and balanced
government. He urges a legislature that represents all citizens
equally, and effectively balances the needs of "the rich and the poor,
the laborious and the idle, the learned and the ignorant." Adams
believed a free and balanced government must effectually control
rivalries.
