Burroughs, Edgar Rice (1875-1950) American author. In 1896, served in the
Seventh Cavalry in the Arizona Territory where he contracted dysentery.
After his discharge, he married his childhood sweetheart and worked a
variety of odd jobs including light bulb and pencil sharpener salesman.
He even tried to join the Chinese Army. At one point, he was so poor that
he was forced to sell his wife's jewelry to survive. Turning to writing, he
created Tarzan in 1912- a character that achieved immense popularity in
print, radio, movies, and television.
At the Earth's Core (1914) The first of the Burroughs' Pellucidar Series,
At the Earth's Core follows David Innes and Abner Perry to Pellucidar, a
civilization at the center of the earth. Pellucidar is ruled by an advanced
civilization of reptiles called Mahars, while the human inhabitants are
primitive, stone-age people. In this story, Innes falls in love with Dian
the Beautiful who later is abducted and must be rescued. We are also
introduced to such characters as Hooja the Sly One and Jubal the Ugly.
