Schaff, Philip (1819-1893) The chairman of a 19th century group of
thirty-four American Biblical scholars who along with sixty-seven
Englishmen prepared the Revised Version of the Bible. Schaff was also
the author of a number of volumes, primarily on church history, from
his chair in Wittenberg, Pennsylvania and at Union Theological Seminary
in New York.
The American Idea of Religious Freedom (1888) An excerpt from "Church
and State in the United States," in which Schaff describes the
"distinctive character of American Christianity." The separation of
church and state was, to Schaff, a new and important chapter in the
history of Christianity. Because religion is voluntary, religion and
liberty are inseparable, he reasons. He goes on to compare American
Christianity to European Christianity.
