3.5 stars - A very interesting album
Waste Of Mind (1998.) Zebrahead's first album.Through the course of the nineties, alternative rock reached an all time high it will probably never reach again. A number of bands experimented with a number of styles - some successful, some unsuccessful. One of these many bands was Zebrahead. These guys attempted to fuse punk and rap. Sounds odd, doesn't it? Well, it is. Sadly though, with all the emerging alternative rock artists in the nineties, these guys tend to go forgotten. Read on for my review of the band's first album, 1998's Waste Of Mind.
The first thing I need to state is that none of the songs on this album are covers. Get Back, Walk Away, Someday, and Time are not the Beatles, James Gang, Sugar Ray, and Pink Floyd songs - these are ALL Zebrahead originals. Most of the songs on this album follow a very similar style that fuses elements of punk and rap - and it makes for a rather interesting listening experience. The only really big hit (and the only song on here that tends to get any real recognition) is Get Back. This track is, for the most part, worthy of its popularity. No, it's not the best thing on here, but it's a good song nonetheless. My personal favorite cut on the album is a minor hit called The Real Me. The vocals in this track are top notch, and it even features a guitar solo (a damn good one too!) Other tracks worth checking out are Feel This Way, Check, Someday, and the title track. The latter has an instrumental sequence that, while odd, still rocks. One complaint I have about this album is that the songs are almost all set up the same way - long verse/short chorus/normal verse/normal chorus/instrumental break/double chorus. Also, I wish the band would have kept the rapping to a minimum, since I lean more toward punk than I do rap.
Overall, this is a good album if you're into modern rock bands. If you only get one Zebrahead album, though, I would have to recommend the follow-up release, Playmate Of The Year. That album features more of a pop-punk sound than this album, which ultimately makes it the better release. This isn't a bad album, but it's not necessarily a great one either. As with most albums that try fusing different styles of music, listen with an open mind - or don't listen at all.

Zebrahead's Best
This CD is phenominal. Zebrahead's first offering fuses alternative rock and funk into great music. "The Real Me" "Someday" and "Move On" have great meaning. All of the songs are fun, fast, and crazy. "Time" is a lightning-fast showpiece for Ali's vocals. With two vocalists, you get rap and singing both, usually a mix on every track. "Fly Daze" is a disco track. Its great! Trust me, you'll like this disc if you appreciate alternative rock, punk, or ska. Some have compared them to 311, but they are much better in my eyes.
a lot of talent
What is Zebrahead? Well, Ali is a rap-style vocalist who spits his clever lyrics rapid-fire (check out the song "time"). The lead singer also plays guitar, and they've got a talented bassist and guitarist, as well as a drummer. I thought they had a DJ but all of their sound effects come from the lead guitarist. These guys are freaking awesome. See them in concert!! Their music is a mix of reggae, funk, hip-hop, and pop-punk if that makes any sense. This CD is wicked, every track on this CD rocks my world. This is the finest from Zebrahead, make sure you get this one.
A Must-Have CD
This is one of those CDs that comes along every once in a good while that becomes an instant classic...up there with Nirvana Nevermind and, well, any Weezer CD. Very unique sound, all the songs on this CD are amazing (check out Playmate of the Year too). Im just wondering why these guys arent bigger than Britney. Theyre coming out with a new CD in June or July, so maybe then. We'll see.
