Van Halen Reviews

Gary Cherone:- Van Halen with no ego!!
I don't know what's gone into all the Van Halen fans- be it of Dave or Sammy era. This album is so differently beautiful. With tracks like 'From Afar' and 'Josephina', Van Halen have surely done some beautiful experimentational work. The new vocalist Gary Cherone sings so purely from the heart- but of course the lyrics are very different and unusual for being VH. Gary's singing has given an egoless sound to VH. Hardcore VH fans will know what I mean. Overall, this disk is a powerful package with a feel to it.

different, but good
Well, this is not your typical VH album, but in my mind, Gary Cherone, gives a good shot at filling some big shoes. The highlights of the album are Fire In the Hole, Without You, and Dirty Water Dog.

This Sucks, Say I
Wow! This album has to be one of the worst ever created. I'd rather dunk my head in an unflushed toilet than be subjected to this filth again. Please Eddie, wrap it up!

Eddie's Solo Album
I think that any Van Halen fan willing to look at this album from an objective point of view, and take it for what it is -an Edward Van Halen solo album, can't deny that this is a damn good album. Sure, it's not the classic Dave or Sammy version of Van Halen that we all love... and I guess it's a lot easier to take it for what it is now that we have Sammy back, and can now view this as the solo album that it is, but it isn't a bad record by any means... I mean, come on... it's freaking Van Halen! Different? Yes. But bad? No. Not at all. In fact, quite good... and I think most true Van Halen fans will eventually learn to appreciate it... just like people did with "Fair Warning" over time... people disliked that one too until years later, when they were willing to give it a second listen...
Now, don't get me wrong... I couldn't be happier that we are now back to the "party/chasing skirts" version of Van Halen... but this IS a good album. A really good solo/side-project album is how I look at it. It sure doesn't deserve the disrespect that it gets from Van Halen fans.

One of the greatest mistakes ever in rock n roll.
This has got to be one of the greatest bombs in rock history. And it will go down in time as a serious mistake by a legendary band. The songs just plain suck, and Eddie just sounds as he's trying to do his best without delivering the goods. I hope the 2004 reunion will bring Sammy back to the studio for a comeback album.
Having jettisoned yet another lead singer, casting off meat-and-potatoes rocker Sammy Hagar for leaner, cleaner former Extreme vocalist Gary Cherone, Van Halen ushers in its third incarnation with the appropriately titled 3. Trouble is, as a lyricist, Cherone too often speaks from the head, not the heart, filling the album with political cant that is dry and ill-suited to the band's party-hearty image. Worse, Cherone sounds disconcertingly like Hagar, giving 3 the uncomfortable feel of a tribute album. And while Eddie Van Halen's guitar still mows down anything in sight on tracks like "Neworld" and "From Afar," it's difficult to excuse his new-agey keyboard epic "How Many Say I," or his tentative lead vocal on the track. In a rare instance for a great band, it's one step forward, two steps back. --Daniel Durchholz
Special Japanese edition of their 1998 album & first with ex-Extreme vocalist Gary Cherone. Limited to the initial pressing only, it comes packaged in an oversized slipcase with the disc in a standard jewel case, plus a 20 page booklet featuring a discography, photos, a biography (in Japanese) and replica autographs. Musically, it's the same as the U.S. edition. 12 tracks, including the single 'Without You'. A Warner Brothers release. Mike Post (theme to TV's 'L.A. Law') produced the record.
