Vagabond Heart Reviews

Little Known Gem In Rod Stewart 's Repertoire
After seeing Rod Stewart live in concert recently, I went in search of "It Takes Two" which had brought the house down at his show. Although I own many of his CD's, this cut was not on any of the ones I had. Although I bought it strictly for this Rod/Tina Turner duet, I found many more "lesser known" songs I thoroughly enjoy on this one. "Rebel Heart" is classic Rocking Rod for those of us who first fell in love with him in the 1970's. The soulful "When A Man's In Love" is also alone worth the cost of the CD. Equally enjoyable are the classic "Rhythm of My Heart" and his delightful homage to Motown with "The Motown Song." I've been playing this one over and over and pondering why it never achieved the success of his other albums.

Originally released in 1991, it was his 18th album and is dedicated to his father who had recently passed away. It was his father that had the foresight to give him a guitar on this 14th birthday instead of the model railway equipment Rod requested. Rock music owes a deep debt of gratitude to Mr. Robert Joseph Stewart for such an inspirational gift.

Rod Stewart regaining his strenght
It doesn't come close to the magnificent "Every Picture Tells A Story", but compared to Rod Stewart's awful 80s output, "Vagabond Heart" is actually a pretty strong and quite diverse album.

The production is a bit slick, but Stewart's performance is soulful and sincere, and "Vagabond Heart" includes a great cover of Runrig's "Rhythm Of My Heart", a couple of very good originals ("Rebel Heart", "When A Man's In Love"), the radio-friendly duet with Tina Turner, "It Takes Two", a fine rendition of Van Morrison's beautiful ballad "Have I Told You Lately", and a swinging rendition of Larry John McNally's "The Motown Song".

"Vagabond Heart" is quite heavily influenced by soul music (and less by disco, fortunately), and even though it contains a lot of "filler", there are also several really good songs here.
Worth picking up for Rod Stewart-fans (unless they're only fans of his disco-period in the 80s).
3 1/2 stars.

Poor quality of recording!
Don't get me wrong! Rod Stewart is great and his album is great, but this CD that I bought sounds like from under the ground! No kidding. I compared Amazon.com's sample sound and sound of this CD and it differs a lot! Amazon.com sample sounds so much better, especially the vocal. The vocal in the CD is buried deep under the ground. Is this only my CD or did you notice that on yours as well? I just can not hear almost nothing that Rod sings! The instrumentals are quite well recorded, but Rod sounds like he's in another town while his band plays right here somewhere. So I give it 3 stars because of the quality of recording which are spread as follows:

5 stars to Rod Stewart

0 or if not possible then 1 star for the very poor quality of recording!

A great album by Rod Stewart
This is a really good album. I can't compare it to any of his other albums, because this is the only one of his that I have. He has one of the greatest voices in the music industry. I would have to say that the best songs on this album are "Rithym of my Heart", "The Motown Song", "Have I Told You Lately", and "If Only". I like the song "It Takes Two", but, Tina Turner kinda ruins it for me. Don't get me wrong, she's a great singer usually, but on this track, she just doesn't sound right. He really should have found someone else for the duet. Rod just sings so much better than her in this song that she seams to be out of place. Aside from that, this CD is very good. I was actually surprised of how good it was. It's one of my favorites. If you like Rod Stewart, just get the album, it's worth it.

Rod In Love, and Loss
The 1990's started off with mixed feelings for Rod Stewart. At the time, he was married to his second wife, Rachel Hunter, and also mourning the loss of his father, who secomed to a heart attack. As his time continued on, Rod began to find his way all over again.

His 1991 album, Vagabond Heart, was a true respective of finding love all over again, as well as finding a way to say goodbye to your loved ones. The songs range elegantly from Rock to R&B, to Adult Contemporary. From Rhythm Of My Heart, all the way to The Motown Song, Rod Stewart keeps his electrifying voice in full bloom all the way.

Although Vagabond Heart wasn't as big as Rod's earlier albums from the 1980's, Vagabond Heart is still a must have for any Rod Stewart Fan.
