See If I care
tough little boys
You dont know a thing about me
see if i care Reviews
One of the best country albums from 2003
Another great CD from Gary Allan! The first single "Tough Little Boys" obviously resonated with programers and listeners alike, as it shot to #1 back in the fall of 2003. The album doesn't stray too far from his past ones, which have worked well for him. Allan proves he has a good ear for great songs, evidenced by the ones on this album. The title track should be a single, it's a great ballad written by Jamie O'Hara. "Songs About Rain" is the current single, and a great one at that. Whether its ballads like "Can't Do it Today""I Can Love You", "Don't Look Away", or honky tonk uptempos like "Drinkin Dark Whiskey" and "Nothin On But The Radio", Allan shows his strengths in all. The songs are great, and the closer (a duet with Willie Nelson) on "A Showman's Life" is definately an album highlight. Hopefully he starts to get recognized for his talents, with this release, it could happen!
Don't miss out on the best country album of 2003
I fell in love with Gary Allan after seeing his video for Tough Little Boys. However, I didn't really like the song. Then Songs About Rain was released and I was sold. I also saw the great review this album got in Blender Magazine and was intrigued. Blender is not known for singling out Country artists. So, I proceeded to Amazon, purchased the album and haven't stopped listening to it since. I love it so much, I burned a copy for each one of my CD players, so I don't have to carry it around and worry about it getting damaged. If I had any say in the matter, every song on this album would be released as a single, they're all phenomenal. My favorite by far though has got to be the first track, Drinkin' Dark Whiskey. If you're a fan of country music this is a must have for your CD collection, don't overlook it!
The Best!
The Nashville Scene posted results for 2003's Country Music Critics Poll and Gary Allan was voted 3rd best male vocalist behind Alan Jackson and Johnny Cash. After listening to See If I Care (hundreds of times!), I'd put Gary Allan's voice even higher. Such range from any singer is rare, and there's no monotone in this album, no whine, no monotony. Each song could be a hit and I just never tire of listening to it. Slow songs like I Could Love You and See If I Care, "sing-along" songs like Drinkin Dark Whiskey and Nothing On But the Radio as well as the first radio songs Tough Little Boys and Songs About Rain offer such variety that I can't compliment this album enough.
He never lets me down.
I have every CD Gary Allan has released. He just seems to get better every time. What a sexy voice. Saw him live a few months ago. Sounds like listening to the CD only much sexier! Keep it up Gary. When's the next one??
I feel like strangling him.
The only songs I like from Gary Allan were "Smoke rings in the Dark" and "Right where I need to be" but that's about it. Let me tell you, every time I hear that god awful whiny grating getting on my nerves "Tough little boys" song, I want to hurl the radio out of the window so bad. His voice on this song, I just can't explain real well but it is so annoying, so low and ughhh, just thinking about it makes me want to scream so loud, basically I can't stand this guy anymore, and don't get me started with all his moaning and groaning about rain {his latest song, if you call it a song}in various US states. Every time I hear Mr. Allan on the radio I turn him off right away until he is done. Talk to you later.
While Nashville hitmakers Toby Keith and Kenny Chesney rose from clunky B-level stars to bankable stadium fillers, Gary Allan quietly tapped his foot waiting for the rest of the world to get hip to his cool. On his fifth album, the California surfer/singer--finally nominated for the CMA Horizon award in 2003--gets back to the smoldering alt-country-goes-mainstream groove that made 1999s
Smoke Rings in the Dark
so brilliant, but which hed abandoned on 2002s
Alright Guy
. In a taut tenor, roughed up by cigarettes, liquor, and 3 A.M. ruminations, Allan sings about the inevitable surrender to romantic pain. On "Drinkin Dark Whiskey," he swaggers with roadhouse libido, bragging of "tellin white lies" as a blistering electric guitar break mocks it all. But by the next song ("Cant Do It Today"), in which he angrily vows forgiveness wont come soon for a cheating mate, the lyrics belie his torment: "I can see you dancing in that strangers arms/My world hasnt stopped turning, but its fallen apart." Elsewhere, he sings of the joys and fears of fatherhood ("Tough Little Boys") and hauls in Jim Lauderdale for harmonies on the Buck Owens-meets-the-Texas Tornadoes romp of "Guys Like Me." But as the last cut shows, when the lights go down hes the itinerant musician of Jesse Winchesters stark "A Showmans Life" desperate to stave off loneliness. Its in the albums blue notes that Allan shows himself to be countrys most important New Voice, superstardom be damned.
