ALBUM: Obelisk Movements Lyrics By: Micranots Culture Exodus Illegal Busyness
Obelisk Movements Reviews A good album that grows on you It took me some time to really get into the core of this album. Not because it's a total abstraction, but because it is rich and dense enough to make you appreciate new aspects of it with each new listening. What really touched me, besides good production and microphone skills, is the authenticity that emanates from the music of these guys. Listening to people who do music with their heart and guts, who display a love for the purest form of the Hip Hop art and who don't waste our time trying to convince us that they are the baddest or the richest, is quite a rare thing in the Hip Hop game nowadays. Kool Akiem's production on the album is quite offbeat and dark, but each track has it's own identity. I Self Divine displays original lyrics and has a lot to say on personal and societal issues; however, he is far from being a Rakim on the mic, but the limitations of his flow are compensated by the authenticity of his delivery. Fat tracks on the album include: Preparations, Balance, Culture, The Willie Lynch, but the true standout cut for me is Mother' Day (it's got a vibe that really got me and it's one of the few songs I can listen over and over again with the same pleasure). So, overall, this is a good album, uneven, far from being perfect, but with enough soul, skills, and true Hip Hop attitude to make it a rewarding listening.Hidden gem (3.5 stars) Discovering that "diamond in the rough" is one of the great satisfactions of being a music lover. I came across Obelisk Movements on a hiphop website and was overcome by that very delight. From the horn-led beats of "Pitch Black Ark" that pound your head to the conceptual lyrics tightly delivered by I Self Divine, the Micranots' debut LP will leave you in awe and the question eventually arises, "Why haven't I heard of these guys?" Well, the answer, in short, is quite obvious... they're different. On the first listen, the beats, which for the most part use hard drums over eerie, well-placed samples, will grab you. Even ISD's vocals are sometimes lost in the background. The urgency in the message and the vibe, however, is not lost. Song topics range from drug politics to lady friends to hip hop culture to the upliftment of black people in so-called Amerikkka. Because of the serious tone of most of the songs, you likely won't hear any of this stuff on your local "urban" radio station. Thankfully on the net there are numerous sites that support underground hip hop and give exposure to groups like the Micranots. How else could anyone find a true gem like Obelisk Movements? An excellent hip hop album A great hip hop album takes you to an unfamiliar world, or perfectly captures the one we're all stuck on. Micranots do a little of both. The result is a very solid hip hop album. The beats and the rhymes are both on point and neither really outshines the other. Micranots are perhaps the perfect example of a group that is greater as a whole than it is broken down into its components. Ultimately this is not a classic release, but a worthy one. And while it is definitely underground, and may not be everybody's cup of tea, it is good music.Damm Tight Album !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Micranots debut album "Obelisk movements" is an dope album. These kats rhyimg out of Atlanta is not part of the wack dirty south garbage, they come with some real original hip hop and bring you crazy knowledge. You have to hear the album a few times to hear and analyze all the ill lyrics that I Self Devine are spiting, and the production by DJ Kool Akiem is off the hook. They are new artists are bringing something new and innovative to the hip hop culture. I Self Devine spiting style reminds me of company flow and his deep lyrics remind me of Dead Prez, but micranots are smarter then Dead Prez, because Dead Prez tried to be revolutional on a major label like RCA/Loud(where are Dead Prez now), and Micranots doing the same thing only on an independent label. The beats remind me of boom bap style. Anyway this album is dope and if you like real hip hop then go cop this now. The whole album is banging, some of my favorite tracks are "Pitch Black", "Preparations", "Culture", "Illegal Business"(which is like the movie traffic in hip hop form). "Qween Surpreme" (which describes how a woman should be not an money hungry matrialistic ...), "The Willie Lynch", "Iconoclastic", amd "Exodus". Go check this out. Peacemicranots- good underground hiphop hey, I want everyone to get it straight. MC I Self Divine is from MINNESOTA! He went to south high school. Yep. Anyways, he was born in Cali, lived most of his life in MINNESOTA, but does his music out of Atlanta. Yeah, this cd is fresh too, the beats are complex and the rhymes come heavy with content. I like it alot and you should buy it. I did. As if time-warped from the early '90s, Atlanta's Micranots--I Self Divine and DJ Kool Akiem--deliver complex, conscious rhymes over thick, fuzzy, heavy-snare-kick beats. It's easy to forget that stirring music still lurks in the underground, but Obelisk Movements is a potent reminder of the power of music to be not only sonically compelling, but also spiritually moving. On "Analyze," I Self Divine drops revisionist history lessons: "I'm Jesus / No need for churches / I read Malcolm, Frantz Fanon outcomes / I got a complex, hypocrite, outdone / Analyze." "Illegal Busyness" is a grounded, vicious assault on inner-city drug economies, while "Queen Supreme" pays respect to the strength of black women--their mothers get a paean, too ("Mother's Day"). With their combination of knowledge of self and boom bap, the Micranots evoke the early work of KMD, Blackalicious, and Freestyle Fellowship. Be warned--they come with a pure black whirlwind. --Jon Caramanica
