Kaleidoscope Reviews

The first Banshee's album?
The aptly titled Kaleidoscope is an album with several moods and equally as many guitarists. It's my understanding that this album was made after their first guitarist and drummer left the Banshees. At the time many wondered what would become of Siouxsie and the Banshee but Severin and Sioux released an amazing album! From "Happy House" to "Clockface" to "Skin" and "Lunar Camel" the album never keeps it's center and that is it's appeal.

The Banshees more experimental side
This is Siouxsie and the Banshees 3rd album and the first after original members John McKay and Kenny Morris left the band. Siouxsie and Steve Severin were left to pick up the pieces after the split. They recruited Budgie on drums and John McGeough on guitar and completely changed their musical direction from their first 2 albums. The result was a more experimental album and the introduction of keyboards into their music. The brilliant singles "Christine" and "Happy House" were an excellent example of what they were capable of and remain two of their most loved songs.

to become a Siouxsie fan is to own this album!
As I write this review, I am trying to place myself outside the realm of an obsessed Siouxsie and the Banshees fan and as a newcomer to the whole Banshee phemomena. Only about a year ago was I vaguely aware of this band and happened to catch their videos on VH1 Classic channel (thank God for it!). I was intrigued by the music and by Siouxsie herself, with long, outward spikey hair and full black eyemakeup. So I decided to investigate and came across the only album available at the local music store. It was Kaleidoscope. So i bought it, and I am glad I did! This is one of a few albums I can listen to from start to finish. Happy House is their undisputed "goth" anthem, while Christine gives an insight to their more poppy tunes. Trophy has a sinister marching band beat and deadpan vocals from Sioux that creeped my out! Red Light is their techno anti-plastic surgery song, and Skin has a sexy yet urgent sound to it. This isnt a gothic album, actually none of their albums are goth, but if you are a sucker for great 80s new wave, you NEED to get this album!!! You will be obsessed in no time!

Seargeant Pepper Gone Evil
Abrasive yet poppy sums up Keleidoscope nicely. Realising that their musical vision reached further than the punk scene could allow for, The Banshees embraced the softer yet sparser psychadelic sounds and found that detatched analogue synthesizers complemented their dark subject matter nicely. It is tempting to suggest that at times here the Banshees come accross sounding like an evil St. Pepper (or even Duran Duran), but below the surface of these rather catchy tracks is a lingering itch, a sense of uncomfortability that scratches at the psyche.
Best Tracks: Lunar Camel, Red Light, Christine.

Be dazzled by the Kaleidoscope
Siouxsie and the Banshees' 1980 album was "Kaleidoscope." With 11 songs, this album continues the progression of their developing sound. Although the album has an 80's sound, the songs have a lot of variety. With upbeat songs like "Happy House," mellow songs like "Lunar Camel," catchy ones like "Christine," and weird ones like "Paradise Place," one has a hard time picking a favorite or classifying the album. The unique sounds of Siouxsie and the Banshees make this album an excellent addition to your collection.
