Top Notch Production / Lyricism
After hearing his debut I wasn't sure he could come up with tracks on his second album that would compare. I went out and bought JUSLISEN the first day it came out. After the Intro I was eagerly anticipating the first song "NEWNESS", after the song was finished it probably got repeated about 20 times. This track is a masterpiece created by Ivan "ortadox" Barias, in my opinion the nicest producer around at the moment. The other tracks that stand out on this project are "Half Crazy", "Solong",
and "Previous Cats". The lyrics on this project blend perfectly and are well written and MUSIQ seems to have gained vocal maturity and depth since his first outting. JUSLISEN is a classic Soul album that strikes the right nerves and brings back a lot of great memories, When I hear it I think of riding in my car on a warm summer day with the windows down and checking out the honeys in the summer dresses while pumpin' "Newness" to get their attention.
Just Listen To This Album Please
"Juslisen" (Just Listen) is a wonderful follow-up of Musiq's debut album "Aijuswanaseing" (I Just Wanna Sing). This album showcases numerous changes in his style, including dropping "Soulchild" from his name. This started his signature song titles, which combine everything as one word. The tremendous musical quality proves that it earned the debut at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart. He later received two Grammy nominations for his efforts: Best Male R&B Performance and Best R&B Album. However, it became one of the most underrated albums of 2002, only reaching gold status in sales.
"Juslisen" expresses Musiq's more mature side versus expressed on his debut. This explores a subtle variety of R&B sounds, including neo-soul, contemporary, and modern-day. They were written, produced, and arranged by Musiq. Every song showcases his creative side greatly. His talents place him at Stevie Wonder's level. Musiq is one of few artists that have matched the R&B quality that has been missing for the last twenty years. He keeps the passion on top throughout the album. His approach with the songs takes listeners on a journey through more than just songs.
The lyrics are wonderfully written and performed by Musiq. He sings them with true soul that blends perfectly with the individual theme. He explores a variety of topics, including love and loneliness. Whether he sings an upbeat song or a ballad, his trueness remains. Though he doesn't attempt any fancy vocal sounds, he keeps listeners feeling his every word. The hard work helped spawn two hit singles: "Halfcrazy" and "Dontstop". Such quality proves that he'll continue entertaining for many more years.
"Juslisen" is a great album for the hardcore R&B fan and those looking for true music quality. This is sure to please audiences for a long time. Those wanting more of such R&B quality are also recommended albums of D'Angelo, Angie Stone, Macy Gray, Luther Vandross, Lauryn Hill, and Musiq's other two. Such combination makes a great musical experience.
Juslisen
This album is hot. It shows Musiq's maturity as a person, as well as an artist, as evident in the content of his material on Aijuswanasing to Juslisen. Each track is solid. The songs are heart-felt and the production is wonderful. A soulful vibe for the hip hop generation. Add Juslisen to your music collection. One.
Truly a Music Soulchild
Musiq is one of my favorite soulistic artists. He definately came with it in Juslisen. Every track on this album is just as good as the one before. His more mature sound is for anyone that enjoys the smooth sounds of neosoul. Wonderful c.d. The best tracks include: "Halfcrazy", "Previouscats", "Onenight", "Dontchange" and my favorite "Solong".
The second album from Philadelphia's Musiq keeps the quality level high, mixing equal parts Luther Vandross, Stevie Wonder, and D'Angelo to good effect. Musiq's voice has noticeably matured--the puppy edge of Aijuswanaseing is gone--resulting in a rich tone that reflects a stylistic progression in his music. He's also expanded into new areas, including a slight touch of bossa nova on the excellent "Half Crazy." Meanwhile, "Caught Up" and "Religious" have a late-'80s Big Daddy Kane and Public Enemy feel, heralding a tougher hip-hop sound than the spangle-eyed, jelly-kneed love paeans Musiq included on the first album (such as "Girl Next Door" and "143"). Having said that, Aijuswanaseing remains the essential Musiq starting point, as there's little here that matches the genius of "Speechless" or "You Be Alright." But for those who want to hear the sound of an artist growing up, Juslisen is required listening. --Jake Barnes
