A GREATEST HITS, MISSING THE DANCE HITS!
The point intended here was to make a Adult Contemporary Greatest Hits Package of Vanessa Williams, with only two great upbeat tracks 1)"Running Back To You"(best track ever of miss Williams), and "Right Stuff"(so funky), Vanessa Williams hasn't release a lot of singles, and for that, all her releases could be join in a single cd hits compilation, but a lot of the great move tunes are left out here like: "Happiness", "The Way That You Love", "Work To Do", "He's Got The Look", and this collection made space to less known and not release songs like "Betcha Never"(babyface produced) and "Open Your Eyes, You Can Fly", why?, at least the other tracks are her sensually R&B songs like "Comfort Zone"(great!), "The Sweetest Days"(so sweetly mood), "Dreamin'"(ummm...not a fan of this), "Love Is"(Brenda, Brandon, Dylan, Kelly, Steve, David, Donna and Andrea and the Beverly Hills 90210 miss this tune!), "Where do We go From Here"(sounds like an old song, great vocals), "Oh how the years go by"(the only track from "Next"), of course her only #1 hit single is here "Save The Best For Last", but this collection falls short on the real taste of Vanessa's music, that had so much to offer and was so underestimated by the music business. Hopefully the 20th Century Remastered version of her greatest hits will included the eluded songs. If You don't own any of the Vanessa Williams album this will suited you well, if you do skip this one.
Oh How The Years Go By...
Vanessa Williams GREATEST HITS: THE FIRST TEN YEARS is an accurate collection of her biggest hits from 1988 to 1998, from her first album, 1988's THE RIGHT STUFF, to her most current album 1997's NEXT. Oh How The Years Go By indeed! If anything this collection proves that anyone plagued with scandal can rise above it and still be successful. In Williams' case she had a successful singing career and acting career. The album features some great uptempo hits, such as The Right Stuff, Running Back To You, The Comfort Zone, and many others. As well included are some of her signature ballads such as Save The Best For Last, Colors of The Wind, Oh How The Years Go By, and many others.
While its a good collection, it doesn't offer a complete introspect into her career. It would be nice to see an album issued with her broadway songs such as Alfie, and some of her stunning covers such as What Will I Tell My Heart, Sister Moon, etc. Hopefully though, she will have a new studio album out, its been too long!
Overall GREATEST HITS: THE FIRST TEN YEARS is a pleasant collection to add to your own, to relive these great songs in all their glory.
The Right Stuff
Vanessa Williams definitely has the right stuff to keep your music bug fed. This album is like the best of the already good stuff.
Not Feeling This Collection
This cd is one of the worst collections of all time. First of all, this cd does not include all her hits. Where is "Darling I" and "He's Got The Look" (both from The Right Stuff),"Just For Tonight and the remix of "Work To Do" (both from The Confront Zone) and "(Its Just) The Way That You Loved I "and" Sister Moon" (both from the Sweetest Days)? Plus, where is the commentary? Usually another person who is considered an "expert" in music will talk about an artist's career on a greatest hits collection. To me, this appears to be a rush job. Considering the fact, she has not release any more cds; I really do think that this is her last album for this label. Don't get me wrong; I think Vanessa is a wonderful singer. She's very classy and technical (which is lacking today) in her vocal styles. But I hate this collection package. I also think that Vanessa and her company should have offer a Deluxe package and release this collection with her videos (like Sheryl Crow). This collection feels incomplete. Sorry, but 2 stars.
Best and the missing from the true diva's greatest hits disc
Sure, Vanessa may not the largest diva out there, but one cannot deny is that Vanessa has proven through out the years that she has talent! She's on broadway, doing films and commericals, but the one thing that helped her to propel to her superstar status was her beautiful voice. "Greatest Hits: The First Ten Years" tries and almost succeeds in recapping Williams' career music thus far.
The album includes her chart topping hits like "Dreamin' ", "The Right Stuff" & of course "Save The Best for Last." Every track on the album is a great representation of Williams' career and that she can really sing, but it also fails to be a complete set. With the album only having thirteen of Williams' hits, this album makes this collection fall short. There could be been more representation on this compilation from her last studio album "Next"(which I recommend), like her smash dancefloor hit "Happiness" or "Who were you thinkin' 'bout"(another great tune.)Also, her top 40 hit "Just For Tonight" from her album "The Comfort Zone." The album should of included some her best covers like "What Will I Tell My Heart?" and "Someone Like You" Not to seem too negative, the album also includes the tune "My Flame", a smoldering piece of R&B, to this day that's played often on the local urban and jazz stations and the gem "Open Your Eyes, You Can Fly."
Even with the album lacking some tracks, the album is a great starter for a person that is just been enlightened about Vanessa, but I suggest that you go through the other albums and you'll see the masterpieces that were mean't to be on this album. One more thing, Vanessa, when are you going to release another album? Please, the musically mature want to hear a real diva, ... Come back with your ballads and dancefloor tunes and do a world tour, you fans are missing you, please?!
