If You Say My Eyes Are Beautiful
One Moment In Time
Greatest Hits Reviews
I appreciate Whitney Houston's talent. Really, I do. Although she's decidedly not in the same league as Aretha or Barbra, as the liner notes here would have you believe, Houston does have a wondrous voice capable of soaring gospel transcendence, sweet balladry and dancefloor drama. But she is in desperate need of more interesting, challenging material, and nowhere is this better evidenced than this double-CD of her greatest hits. Disc 1 (subtitled "Cool Down") is overflowing with Love-Gone-Wrong ballads, and it's almost unlistenable. There are a few gems to be found ("Saving All My Love For You," "I Will Always Love You" and "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)"), but they are totally lost amidst dreck like "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" and "All At Once." There's nothing in the production or in Houston's vocal delivery to distinguish one track from the next; hence, the songs on Disc 1 run together into one 78-minute-long listening nightmare. The disc's two new songs (superstar duets with Deborah Cox and Enrique Iglesias) are tepid. Only "My Love Is Your Love," with its shuffling, reggae-steeped beat and Houston's glowing vocal, really stands out from the crowd. Disc 2 ("Throw Down") is a bit more interesting if only because it includes different takes on Houston's uptempo material. Granted, many of these songs sound the same, too, and we really could have done without dance remixes of the ballads "I Will Always Love You" and "Greatest Love Of All." However, on the whole these tracks tend to work because of their novel arrangements and because the singer seems more motivated by The Beat than she does by the canned sentiments on Disc 1. Highlights are an urgent remix of "Love Will Save The Day" by David Morales; the definitive version of the Annie Lennox-penned "Step By Step," produced by Junior Vasquez; and of course, the cover of the Chaka Khan classic, "I'm Every Woman." These tracks, along with Wyclef Jean's "My Love Is Your Love," Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" and Babyface's "Exhale" from Disc 1, provide the best evidence of Whitney Houston's skill as a keen interpreter of R&B classics and songs composed by edgier artists. They also prove that a greatest hits package doesn't necessarily translate into a "best-of." Dance music fans should check out "The Unreleased Mixes," a limited edition four-record boxed set containing extended versions of the remixes included here on Disc 2. Otherwise, this release should be purchased by die-hard fans or completists only.
Throw Down
I have been a fan of Whitney since day one and I think she has one of the greatest voices in pop music today. I have been anxiously awaiting this cd set and it is incredible beyond words. The first cd, Cool Down, features her ballads and it is sheer heaven to hear her crystal clear vocals in her earlier hits like "You Give Good Love" and "All At Once". I was a tad disappointed that "Hold Me", the duet with Teddy Pendergrass is not included here and I'm not sure why it was excluded. And the beautiful "One Moment In Time" is remixed and placed on the dance cd which is also disappointing. I had apprehensions about the 2nd cd which features her dance hits set to remixes. Some of them are wonderful - "I Will ALways Love You" sends chills down my spine. Others, like "So Emotional" and "I'm Your Baby Tonight", I would really prefer the original. Overall, an excellent achievement and an amazing body of work that this woman has achieved with only a few albums released over the years.
The first disc "Cool Down" of this truly magnifcent singer's greatest hits collection is superb, with all her greatest. Then comes "Throw Down". It's started off with "Fine" which is Ok, but it's not classic Whitney. Then she goes off into various remixes, those would have been better off in their original form, EXCEPT "I Will Always Love You". In that song, the best part is by far the 'And I's' where Whitney's best note in the song is transformed into an array of different volumes. It's cool. Bottom line: if you don't have any Whitney cd's and you're looking to get just the classics "Cool Down" will do it for you, "Throw Down" you can 'Throw Out' if you just want unspoiled Whitney classics, but if you're on the lookout for old and new, it's worth every penny.
Is Cool ... But Throw Out
Whitney Houston has had an amazing career, churning out hit after hit over a 20 year span. She will truly be remembered as one of music's greatest divas. Her incomparable voice is showcased beautifully on the first disc of ballads. I was slightly disappointed with the second disc of dance hits, however. I was looking for her greatest hits, and I did not care for many of the "club" mixes of songs that I grew up listening to. I especially miss the original versions of "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" and "How Will I Know". I wish she had released the second disc with the original versions instead.
From Cover to songs, her company has obtained and released a very good compilation. All the songs are timeless classic of Whitney. There are rare songs and I am glad that she didn't want to repeatedly release the songs again and again. It is a great way to consumers specially her fans, why would you buy a CD/2CD if they are exactly the same songs released in her old albums?
If you buy this CD and then you can truly tell people that you have "all" whitney songs. If you bought this and then tell people you don't like Whitney's songs then you have never liked her. If you bought this CD and then tell people you don't like what whitney does now, then you are a liar because how can you like her and now don't? as most songs are exactly from the previous albums.
The remixes are just a bonus. She doesnt have to give you that and you should appreciate it if you buy it. If you don't appreciate what she is doing, then please go ahead listen to something else. She didn't force you to buy her albums, you know!
For an artist who only released four proper albums in a 15-year career, it's astounding to recall how many hits Whitney Houston was able to achieve. The two CDs on
The Greatest Hits
track Houston's rise from mid-'80s Top 40 balladeer to standard-setting diva. Disc 1,
Cool Down
, runs chronologically through Houston's down-tempo love songs, from "The Greatest Love of All" and "I Will Always Love You" to the cleverly conceived new duet with Deborah Cox, "Same Script, Different Cast." She's also showcased as the remixee of choice for DJs on the second disc,
Throw Down
, which serves as the antidote to the lovesick first disc. Calling in marquee mixmasters, Houston's old-shoe tunes get a new millennium polish. "My Love Is Your Love," reinterpreted by Jonathan Peters, captures the versatility of Houston's songs by making the downbeats danceable without going totally Euro-cheese. In contrast, Junior Vasquez's remix of 1985's "How Will I Know" pokes fun at the song's '80s fluffiness by layering in bells, lasers effects, and echoes on top of Whitney's enthusiastic vocals.
