More than Everything
The only reason I bought this album and not Shades of Purple (even though I love Mirror Mirror) is because they sound like five year olds on SOP, but on this album, The Big room, they showed that they can improve, unlike many artists! I guess you would classify this album as pop-rock. Everything, Miss Popular and especially Sometimes are true rocker songs, while What You do About Me is pop. Don't and Payphone are sweet ballads.
1. Everything-I heard this on a Disney album, where it doesn't belong. I love the guitars! "All that we had was so unbelievable, now that it's gone, it's just inconceivable still in my dreams, we were so damn beautiful." 5/52. Jennifer-It's about a girl who is perfect and friends with a boyfriend, and the jealousy they feel. Also a rock song, like Everything. "Stop saying she's just a friend, just a friend. Keep hearing, her name again, name again" 4.5/5
3. Don't-About a guy who is stealing her heart when she already has a boyfriend. The lyrics are excellent, as are the vocals. A wonderful ballad. "When you walked in my world, I was someone else's girl." 5/5
4. Payphone-Kind of boring, but has wonderful voice talent. The lyrics are good, but not great. "I really need to find a payphone..." 4/5
5. What You do About Me-Probably most pop on the album, but still has a rock feel to it. Their voices are great. It's about a guy who has a girlfriend but is intrested in one of them. "All that she wants is you, all that she sees is you, all that you gotta do is set her free." 4/5
6. Love Left For Me-About a guy who abandoned her and she's wondering if he still loves her. It's a great ballad, the voices are great, they hit the high notes perfectly. "Oh I hate, yes I hate all your lies." 5/5
7. Miss Popular-You probably know what it's about: a popular girl. Then she knows what it feels like to be all alone. A lot of people can relate to it, like me. I love the lyrics and guitars. "Oh, so now you know how it feels to be igsignificant." 5/5
8. Wanna Be Where You Are-It's an OK ballad, about someone going somewhere else and she wants to be with him. It's kind of boring, but the lyrics and voice are great. "SAy our love is just a phase, that it's just for some days." 4/5
9. Leave Me Alone-A very angry song about a guy who keeps writing her letters and stuff, even though they broke up. Very rockish song! I love the lyrics. "What I'm trying to say is, get out of my way." 4.5/5
10.Sometimes-Possibly the best song. It illistrates the life of a girl, and it's TRUE! It's the rockiest song on the album. "Sometimes you just feel like s**t...you feel so lost in this pretty world, thats how it sometimes feels to be a girl." 5/5
11.Eventually-The worst song. All it is, basically is Ah ah ah ah ah, eventually. It's boring and repetitive, and they stay on one note. 1/5
So with the exception of Eventually, The Big Room is awesome! If you like pop-rock, and a girl, I highly recommend this to you! Buy this instead of SOP, because there voices have improved since SOP.
This album is EVERYTHING, and more...
So you thought that M2M was just another teen pop flavor of the month a few years ago? Well if so, you thought wrong. M2M has re-vamped their sound from Mandy Moore-ish sounding synthesized pop (with just a touch of guitar and piano) to all out rock with the same catchy melodies that accompany pop music (think Michelle Branch or Jewel). This is a CD that will not be leaving my CD player for a long time, and I'm normally into much harder rock. The lyrics all of the songs are cleverly written, and a lot of them flat out crack me up (especially "Sometimes", "Miss Popular", and "Jennifer"...but don't worry; they crack me up in a good way). "Eventually" serves as an excellent closure to the album. The guitar tacet and the girls' harmony is beautiful. I'd have to say that my favorite tracks are "Everything", "Don't", "Eventually", and "Wanna Be Where You Are". But, definitly buy this album. It's one of the best I've heard this year.
Great Follow Up
M2M is made up of Norwegian teens (well, they are adults now) Marion Raven and Marit Larsen. Sadly, they broke up a little while after this album was released. The first album was 'Shades Of Purple' which got big sales because they had radio friendly songs. 'Don't Say You Love Me' and 'Mirror Mirror' were played so much. This album just didn't have that. I have heard 'Everything' on the radio sometimes, but the next single 'What You Do About Me' really must have flopped. I never heard it on the radio.
1. Everything-This song is about two people dating, but then the relationship fails. The song is one of the poppier ones, and the chorus is very catchy.
2. Jennifer-This is about how there are people in a relationship but the guy has a crush on a girl named 'Jennifer' and how he keeps saying she's only just a friend.
3. Don't-This song is a bit slower. This time it's about the girl. This is a lot like 'Jennifer' actually, except now it's the girl is in a relationship but she has a crush on another guy.
4. Payphone- Another slow song. This song can make you feel sort of sad. It just has that effect on people. But then there are other parts where you feel happy.
5. What You Do About Me-Wow, this song is the best. The opening line really gives you a glimpse at how upset she is. "I wish that I was her, and I wish that she was me."
6. Love Left For Me- This song is slow at the beginning, but gets faster. It's about if he has love left for her.
7. Miss Popular- This song is so catchy, and I'm sure a lot of people can relate. This sogn has a happy ending though. It's about how the 'popular girl' is all snobby and rude, and so now nobody is talking to her.
8. Wanna Be Where You Are-This is pretty much slow all the way through. It's very good though. I have a feeling that the title of this song gives away pretty much what the song is about though.
9. Leave Me Alone-Yet another self explainatory title. This is actually about a guy STALKING her thoguh. Creepy song, with great piano in the backround.
10. Sometimes-This song sounds a bit country western at the beginning! This song is fast, and very good. It's just about girls up and down days.
11.Eventually-Slow. What are they saying at the beginning. I like this song, it's just very relaxing.
I wish that M2M had not broken up,unles the rumor is wrong? But if you want three new songs and a lot of live or accoustic versions of old songs, buy The Day You Went Away:The Best Of.
m2m does it again
After listening to 4 songs from the upcoming Marion Raven CD, killer songs even better than m2m, I had to buy anything I could find by her, I wasn't disappointed by either disc. On this their second disc the girls have matured alot, the lyrics are better and they don't sound like little girls anymore. The songs are a little harder and showcase Raven's great voice and awesome vocal ability much better than the first CD. Though they don't have the catchy choruses of the previos disc, they do have some good lead guitar that the last disc didn't have. Some songs are better than others, as always, but there is not a bad song on the entire disc. Like the first disc it is very well produced, not the typical way overproduced female teen disc, the producer being the same one as the first disc. The girls voices still blend very well together, they really are very talented. The only drawback to this vs the previous disc is length, it's only 37 minutes, Shades Of Purple is 51 minutes. I don't normally listen to any teen music, but this is definitely not typical teen music, I admit I do have Avril Lavigne, though she is not near as telented as m2m were. If you haven't heard it give it a spin, you'll be glad you did. Unfortunately they are no longer together, but if the rest of the Raven CD is as good as the 4 songs I've heard, then it is even better than either m2m disc. I can't wait for it to be released, hopefully it will be soon.
It should have been more successful...
The Big Room was released in 2002, and its first single was Everything. They were planning to make a tour with Jewel to promote this album. The fans received the bad news during the tour: M2M broke up. The second single was What You Do About Me. This wasn't a very successful album, not many people bought it. Still, it has some very good songs. There's also a big change in their voices, but we don't hear Marit a lot. The track list is:
Everything: Almost everyone heard this song. It was played in the radio a lot. It talks about a guy who never called Marion, and she was getting obsessive about it. It was written by Marion and Marit.
Jennifer: One of the fans favorites in the album. It's about a girl (Jennifer) that's really pretty, nice, sweet... and a girl's boyfriend keeps talking about Jennifer, so the girl gets jealous. But she can't really hate Jennifer because she's so nice with her. It's written by Marit and Marion. Why Jennifer? It's simple. Marion said at her Message Board that almost every Jennifer is pretty and that it sounded well with "I hate her".
Don't: It's a very good song. It's very relaxing. It talks about a girl who loves her boyfriend, but then she meets a new guy and falls in love with him, so she is really confused. It's also written by Marit and Marion.
Payphone: A song written by both girls, it's about somebody that's alone and it's about needing somebody else, someone that she can talk to and be herself. The song it's pretty relaxing and it makes you think about friendship.
What You Do About Me: A pretty good song. It talks about this girl who likes a guy who is in a relationship and he tells her she likes her too. So the girl wants him to break up, because she isn't going to let him cheat on his girlfriend.
Love Left For Me: It's about this guy that didn't pay attention to his girlfriend so he dumped her, and the girl gets really hurt and hopes he has some love left for her. Cool song, but the Acoustic version is better. It's written by Marion.
Miss Popular: A great song, one of the best in the album, and also one of the fan's favorites. It's about the typical popular girl who disses everyone and thinks she's the best. So everywhere she goes, people are whispering and looking at her. They say "Now you know how it feels to be all alone". They tell her that she is now feeling how the others felt when she treated them badly. It's written by Marit and Marion.
Wanna Be Where You Are: It's the Girl In Your Dreams of The Big Room. It's written by Marion and she talks about her relationship when she works, that she has to fly so she can't spend much time with him and she misses him. Great lyrics and Marion sings awesome but where's Marit?
Leave Me Alone: It's written about Marion. It's about a the same guy in Love Left For Me! But now he wants her back and starts stalking her. And she just wants him to leave her alone, because he hurted her so much and she doesn't feel like he deserves to be forgiven.
Sometimes: Great song about the typical bad day in a girl's life. Nothing goes fine. But it seems that they could get a good song out of it! It's written by Marion and the music was made by both. The music is great!
Eventually: It's the extra track in the CD. It was written in Chile while they were on tour. It's a really soft and sweet song. It talks about a love relationship, when they are both feeling the same way. Also written by both.
This Norwegian duo transcended the glossy teen-pop sound of their debut Shades of Purple through sincere performances and good songwriting. With their sophomore set, Marion Raven (vocals/keyboards) and Marit Larsen (vocals/guitars) take an organic, live approach to their music as they enlist the support of rock veterans including drummer Kenny Aronoff, bassist T-Bone Wolk, and guitarist Jimmy Bones. The results range from tender ballads to energetic pop-rockers. M2M continue to distinguish themselves not only by their catchy vocal harmonies and songwriting talent but by shirking clichés. They don't serenade boys with cutesy ballads, nor do they flaunt sexual innuendoes. This is teen-pop with a genuine sense of romanticism and innocence lacking from the Britneys, Mandys, and Christinas of the world. Marion and Marit's well-crafted songs don't just deal with being and falling in love, they deal with hurt and disappointment. They even get downright catty on "Jennifer," their ode to female jealousy, and give "Miss Popular" a taste of exclusion. Although they may not yet have achieved the multiplatinum American status of other teen singers, the women of M2M should prove to have a much longer career. --Bryan Reesman
