Anuthatantrum Reviews

If you liked Unrestricted....
You'll love this album. While the lyrics on Unrestricted were undoubtedly Da Brat's rawest to date, I think the beats on the Anuthatantrum tracks are catchier. Unfortunately, Da Brat seems to have lost her edge with her latest effort Luv & Limelight, as one reviewer aptly pointed out, it's all about f**king other girl's boyfriends. Boring. Unrestricted was Brat at her hottest. Anuthatantrum was wasn't as mainstream, but maybe that's part of the reason I like it better, because it has "new" songs that I haven't heard over and over again.

Man, what a disappointment
Da Brat dropped this album, Anuthatantrum, with a rapid-fire flow that quickly silenced all the haters who said that she was biting Snoop Dogg. It's too bad that not many quality songs result from this formula. Nearly every song is about getting lifted and challenging wack MC's and nothing else. And if you read the liner notes, EVERY song "contains a sample from" such-and-such. I misplaced this CD and wanted to look for it for only two songs: "Lyrical Molestation" and "Live it Up", giving a nod to Biggie and Akinyele, respectively. Also, she had the nerve to end this album at 34 minutes like she did something devastating.

Does anybody remember this album?
Despite Da Brat's first two songs "Funkdafied" and "Fa All Y'all" being bumped like nobody's business, her debut album Funkdafied had a lukewarm response...in other words, nobody really bought it. She came back in 1996 with this Anuthatantrum album. But if this was her sophomore offering, you can understand why her third album Unrestricted took a while to get to the masses.

The main problem with this album is that for the most part Brat doesn't say anything to keep us interested. She mentions that she can "pop a N like a pimple" in "Just A Little Bit More", but other than that, it's the same old stuff. She spends most of the album talking about either terrorizing the mic or saying how men can't touch her. And when she's not doing that, she's busy getting high, especially in "Let's All Get High", which is followed by the pointless "West Side Interlude", which just has her and Jermaine Dupri coughing and giving shout-outs for six seconds.

Another problem with this album is that it's overproduced. This album has more samples than Sam's Club. I guess we can let that slide somewhat because it was 1996, but if JD really insisted on sampling, he could've used music we haven't heard too many times already, like Biggie's "Who Shot Ya" ("Lyrical Molestation") and Rick James' "Mary Jane" ("Sittin' On Top Of The World"). Also, the guest spots seem awkward. Not only is Krayzie Bone's flow better than Brat's in "Let's All Get High", he has a bigger part in the song than Brat does. It's the same situation with JD rapping on "Keepin' It Live". But the worst production comes on "Just A Little Bit More". It features a sample of Roger Troutman's "Be Alright", and whenever anyone samples Roger or Zapp, hip-hop heads say it's the dopest beat they ever heard...in this case, people would say JD came up with a dope beat. (Don't say you never heard anyone say EPMD's "You Gots To Chill", or any Erick Sermon song for that matter, has the dopest beat you ever heard.) This song's chorus is sung by Trey Lorenz, but if you didn't read the liner notes beforehand, I guarantee you wouldn't be able to tell if that's a man or a woman singing.

Listeners will probably be disappointed after about 33 minutes into the album, but they'll be hoping that Da Brat's dopest material is still to come. Surprise! That's the end of the album. An album this generic done in only a little over half an hour tells us this was just a clock-punching frenzy. Not very memorable.

The Funk Badit is Back!!!!!
Da Brat made an excellent effort on her sophomore record ANUTHATANTRUM. the fast raps, guest artist and the banging beats make dis one of da phatest cd'z of the year and probably should have gone platinum. the first one did but this one only recieved gold status, which is well deserved. if you ask somebody who da brat is now a days though they may not or may know her. my favorite tracks are "my belifes", "lets all get high" (featuring Krayzie Bone), "ghetto love" (featuring Tionne Watkins of TLC), "sittin on top of the world", "just a little bit" and "lyrical molestation" (featuring The Notorious B.I.G). She mixes well with the production done by Jermaine Dupri and Carl-So-Lowe for her record lable So So Def Records. The release is credited twards a 96 release but many people still sing the songs and play it in 99 and i am one of them. this cd is not a good effort because i'm a big fan it is a good effort because everypiece of this record will make someone happy. pick this up if your having any doubts and also pick up her new one coming out in either august or sepetember

Da album is BLAZIN !I can't wait for the next 1.
Da album is BLAZIN and still gets played in my tape deck in '99.DA BRAT has da tightest lyrics over da hottest beats, and I hope to meet her oneday. When da new album drops I'm going to cop it,and with 2 tight albums like da othaz,I suggest anyone 2 pick up Funkdafied,Anuthatantrum, and when da new 1 comes out pick that up,too.
