A vastly underrated masterwork
When one thinks of the most underrated albums in rock history, a few should automatically come to mind. One of those is Animals, a dark, moody, and ultimately spectacular effort by Pink Floyd. Although some are turned off by it's depressing themes and long arrangements, Animals is a true treat for those willing to hear it out. Spanning four songs on five tracks similar to Wish You Were Here, Animals affects the listener like very few albums can. All the tracks are essentials:Pigs on the Wing (1&2)- Two short accoustical songs bookending the album. Both are very catchy and introduce as well as close Animals suitably.
Dogs- Arguably Floyd's greatest song, Dogs is 17 minutes of stunning musical perfection and awesome lyrics to boot. A very vicious song as well as the standout of the album.
Pigs- Another lengthy track with more great musical arrangements. The bass line throughout is one of Roger's best.
Sheep- The most well known, as well as the darkest, song on Animals. This surely ranks amongs high Floyd's most cynical, hard hitting work.If the beginning buildup and first few minutes don't freak you out, the menacing rendition of The 23rd psalm will.
Even among such giant achievements like Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall, Animals still remains of of Floyd's best offerings. As diehard a fan as I am, it still took me awhile to finally give in and get it. Now, I couldn't do without it. Anyone who does the same will surely agree. Pop Animals in, put on some headphones, turn out the lights, and prepare for a totally electrifying experience.
A somewhat overlooked classic
With its absurdly long songs ("Dogs," for instance, goes past seventeen minutes), "Animals" had virtually no chance of becoming a radio standard like "Dark Side of the Moon" or "The Wall." That's too bad, because I think this album surpasses its better-selling counterparts. "Animals" is, simply put, a masterpiece of musicianship and songwriting. The into/outro combination of "Pigs on the Wing" bookends three ten-plus minute epics, "Dogs," "Pigs," and "Sheep." With insinuating melodies, hair-raising guitar solos, and beautiful synths interwoven into the mix, Pink Floyd created an ambient sound that was intricate and soothing at the same time. Perhaps most importantly, Roger Waters delivered a vocal performance for the ages, with a texture that reflected the depth of the album's lyrics. Waters's delivery here is understated, but at that same time it's charged with emotion and indignation. With Waters and every musician in top form, "Animals" is an excellent album in every way, and it deserves even more than the considerable amount of attention that it's gotten.
Roger Waters is a genius, great album
This is a great album, the music is captivating and the lyrics are mesmerizing! A must have!
I read some revues from people who say this is good.
I read some revues from people who say this is good.
You know what I say to that?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
OF COURSE THIS IS NOT GOOD. IT IS STUPID AND BORING AND A DULL TREAT. BUT I HEARD ALL HIPPY BANDS ARE LIKE THAT.
IT SHOULD REALLY ALL BE FORGOTTEN FOR IT IS MEANINGLESS NOISE ONLY THERE TO CONPHUSE PEOPLE.
animaniac
not the greatest pink floyd album of all time but a good one at that. if you are a new classic rock listener this is not the floyd album for you, but as you get more into them and you start your collection with dark side, the wall, and wish you were here, this is the fourth or fifth floyd album you should get. both parts of pigs on the wing are so good because of the change from the other songs on the album. dogs and pigs (three different ones) are good long songs and something you will want to shut off if you havent listened to them before, but keep listening because there is a treat in sheep, the best song off this album.
Although not in the same vein as the deliciously hallucinogenic earlier Floyd works such as Ummagumma and Dark Side of the Moon, Animals is innovative and musically diverse in its own right. Inspired in part by George Orwell's political fable Animal Farm, Roger Waters condemns the avarice and inequalities of capitalism, metaphorically and musically grouping humans as pigs, dogs, and sheep. The pigs are self-righteous hypocrites inflicting their beliefs on everyone else, the dogs greedy money-grabbers, and the sheep witless followers. Dark, cynical, and brilliantly composed, Animals is an ingenious and under-acknowledged album. --Naomi Gesinger
