Afraid Of Sunlight Reviews
One of the most impressive albums I've heard in a long time
I'd heard of Marillion because of Pete's working with Transatlantic which is a very impressive prog super group, since I knew the bands for the other member I figured these guys deserved a shot. After doing some reading I figured this sounds like a good album to start with... This is without a doubt one of the most impressive albums I've heard in a long time. Weird, dark, light and heavy all at once it gives a great mix. I love the technical aspects of my prog bands but with these boy they substitute amazing chops (which there are some of) with good solid writing and good music. This is the album you can play around your non prog/harder rock friends and they won't yell at you to turn it off. All in all this is a great rock album and I'll be getting some more by this band... "Brave" is supposed to be even better so we shall see... If the bonus addition is available the extra cash it costs is well worth it the bonus are great and I kinda like "Cannibal Surfer Babe" better on the bonus. So to sum up great album and do yourself a favor and buy it ASAP.
Marillion's masterpiece with Hogarth
What an incredible modern-rock album! HUGE production, very dynamic, extended highs and incredibly deep bass (has to be at or under 30Hz in places). Unless you have a high-end stereo, you won't hear all of the music that is laid on this disc. Although this is not in-your-face-music, it sounds best at maximum volume because it packs a dynamic, emotional wallop. AOS combines the best elements of 60s/70s progressive rock, gives it edge and a kick in the behind. Steve Hogarth's voice has never sounded so clear, vibrant and intimate (well, except when I heard him live). It connects with the listener like few other albums this decade. The songwriting is much more focussed than the similar-sounding Brave. The Afraid of Sunrise-Out of this World-Afraid of Sunlight suite is possibly the most impressive string of tracks of any album I've heard this decade. Mark Kelly creates a lush, seeemingly endless wave of synths and strings that always seem to matter and never to show off. It is also obvious that Ian Mosley has refined his classical-styled drumming style to impressive heights on the album. Just listen to King. The only flaw I see with AOS is the odd Beach Boyesque track Cannibal Surf Babe that doesn't seem to fit in with the rest of the album. YMMV. Overall, AOS is a very mature album from the best cult band across the pond. It shows just how talented these guys are. Albums like this demonstrate most of the best, vital rock music is never obvious nor on the radio.
THE BEST ALBUM OF THE NINETIES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This album is amazing, weird sounds, great song writing, fantastic guitars and Steve Hogarth sings PERFECT. This album could be produced by Phil Spector or Brian Wilson, it's simply amazing. Favourite tracks: Gazpacho, Cannibal Surf Babe, Beautiful, Afraid Of Sunrise, Out Of This World, Afraid Of Sunlight, Beyond You and King.
Hands down the best album of the 90's
Unbelievable, emotionally exhausting masterpiece. That this is not on the top of every critcs poll for best albums of the last 25 years is beyond me. Runs the gamut from tender to sparkling to agonizing..I can't even begin to describe what this album does to me.
One of the best albums ever made
Quite simply, Afraid of Sunlight is one of the best albums ever made. From the opening song, "Gazpacho," a song about abuse that brings to mind the likes of O.J. Simpson through the title track and it's beautifully uplifting chorus to the Phil Spector inspired "Beyond You" and the closing track "King," which deals with the tragic death of Kurt Cobain, Afraid of Sunlight is a true masterpiece.
