A great single. "Ava Adore" sounds great. It's rawkin' strings and techno icing sets you up with a thrill ride of lyrical and musical magic. "Czarina" is a beautiful acoustic song which speaks a beautifuly heartbreaking story that Corgan is so good at telling. One of my favorite Adore-era songs is found on this single. "Once and a While" offers a very soothing, sorrowful, yet mellow song. It, IMO, sums up a lot of what the band was going through during Adore. Corgan's voice cracks with fatigue and weariness as he sings, "You'll try to care once and a while for me. But I will be there once and a while, more then a while fore you." It roots back to Adore's "Annie Dog". A must have for any TRUE Smashing Pumpkins fan.
This single is much more than I expected. First, of course, is Ava Adore, a song I can't listen to without being inspired to do some crazy interpretive dance. Then comes Czarina, a good song for the Pumpkins, but one that frustrates me because it makes me question my life (always wanting more Smashing PUmpkins CDs, etc...). The last song is Once in a While. I have only had the single for 4 days, and no song has ever made me cry as many times as this one has. It is not only beautiful, but I've just been reading this religious book and that is the only way I can describe it: sacred. I am almost afraid to say that because now some of you will think I am being lame and stupid, but that's not true, I really love this song. If you really listen, Billy Corgan is stroking your heart...AFTER it has finished thumping to the excellent grooves of the song Ava Adore.
...all that I want is waiting for me there...
The single has three songs, much like other Smashing Pumpkins singles. This single includes the fantastic 'Ava Adore,' full of catchy lyrics, and though it starts off with a somewhat strange electronic beat, it blends in with Billy Corgan's sining as well as D'arcy and James's guitaring (or are those electronic as well?) Well the other two songs are unreleased in any other albums! Wow! Don't be tempted. They include mellow drumming, poor guitaring, and Billy's naisily voice talking. Don't get this single, except if you are a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan AND MUST OWN EVERYTHING BY SMASHING PUMPKINS! The standout of this single is 'Ava Adore', not the other two: 'Czarina' and 'One in a While'. I would encourage the listener to buy 'Adore' by Smashing Pumpkins, which includes another great song other than 'Ava Adore', which is 'Perfect'. Though Adore has been criticized for it's mellowness, some of you may enjoy it. If you prefer the more rockish tunes, definitly check out some other titles by Smashing Pumpkins, especially 'Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness' and 'Siamese Dream'.
I really love the style of "Adore", and the singles for "Ava Adore". In my opinion, the best song on this single is "Once In A While", but the other two songs are really beautiful works of art as well. Billy Corgan has shown the world that he can make any kind of music, and make it sound excellent. Not only has he mastered songwriting, and the guitar, but the piano as well. I consider Billy Corgan to be the "Mozart" of modern alternative music. This is one man who has really accomplished it all. I strongly recommend that if you are a fan of the Smashing Pumpkins, or a fan of alternative music in general, go pick up "Adore", along with this singles, and I promise you'll like it.
Don't be too tempted...
I was almost caught off guard by how good the other songs were...then I just remembered "hey, this is the Pumpkins we're talkin about here". But really, I already had Adore when I bought this so I knew how good Adore was. I had also heard Czarina and I thought it was pretty good so I decided to buy it. Then when I got it I listened to Once In a While...that song is really good. So if you like the Disarm/To Forgive less heavy type of songs, or you're a pumpkin fan you NEED to buy this.
