Abandon Reviews
A Band On
Although some of the songs are pretty similar to each other, this is a good album. An original Purple sound has changed, of course, during their 32 years carrier, but they still know how to rock. Abandon is full of nice fast rockers; especially Any Fule Kno That, Fingers To The Bone and '69 are very good. Lyrically this is not anything special as Any Fule... having most silliest lyrics I've heard for a while, but that has never been the most important thing in Purple's music. Bludsucker is very intresting piece on the album, because it was originally recorded in 1970. The new version is as good as the old one and actually I prefer this version on Abandon due to its freshness and better quality of sound. Almost Human and Whatsername belong to better half of the album while She Was and Jack Ruby are the worst in here. In addition to those there couple of avarage songs, Don't Make Me Happy and Watching The Sky, which are not bad but little too much same. But overall Deep Purple still seems to be "A Band On" - not abandoned.
Still rockin'
I think it's amazing how these guys, well into their fifties, can still put out good music! While I'll admit that Morse is no Blackmore, on these past two albums he has done a good job keeping that "purple" feel. Gillan is still an unbelievable singer: soulful, charasmatic, and sometimes downright nasty! Paicey, in my mind, hasn't slowed down at all on the sticks. Glover and Lord are still fantastic. This particular lineup, on their second album, delivered some goods. "Any Fule Kno That"-some nonsense lyrics, but a hard n' heavy song. "Almost Human," "Don't Make me Happy," "Seventh Heaven," "Watching the Sky," "Fingers to the Bone," and the remake of "Bloodsucker" are all the highlights of the album. The first half was better than the second, but overall it turned out to be a solid album by a veteran hard-rock band. I can't wait for their next studio release, Gillan promised that it would be a good one!
A good cd
My favorite tracks from this cd are the opening two on the cd. The cd gets a little bluesy toward the middle. There a couple of songs that I can't get into on it. Jack Ruby and Blodsucker. I think the opening track makes worthy of buying alone.
their 16th album
This is one of their worst studio albums. Here are only a few good songs, which are bloodsucker (the old song from in rock), don't make me happy, and jack ruby. This album is kinda heavy, and noisy. And it's only for die-hard fans.
This CD is remarkable! I adored Deep Purple in the 70's, and never stopped enjoying their great classic songs. But when they had the Purple reunion of '84, I expected it to be the last chapter in Purple history, particularly when Blackmore left for what seemed certainly to be the final time in '94. How could any band replace Richie Blackmore, and continue to be great?
Well, the Purple did not "replace" Blackmore, they reinvented the band! First, "New" Purple band got hold of the most unique sounding guitarist to arise to prominence during the last decade of the past century - Steve Morse. Then, Gillian seemed to adapt his vocals to current stylings, and they already had one of the greatest rhythm sections in rock history, so with this attack , the Purple literary became a "cutting edge" leader in the sounds of today with wonderfully devised songs that are so well constructed that they could be hits with ANY reasonably proficient group performing them, much less Deep Purple! Man! Morse is an incredible guitarist!! No player sounds like him!! His solos are so well thought out that the sound seems to be generated by a computer, etc. I sometimes back the songs up to hear his parts a couple of times during the songs. The first two songs on the CD have this type of guitar, with the remainder of the band adding wonderful layers of sound thus creating the kind of songs that the best of the younger bands rarly produce.
Jon Lord is the best keyboard player ever! He is amasing here on his last studio performance with the group.
This CD is the second with Morse, but the first that I have gotten. After having had it a few weeks, all I can recomend to others is that one should not buy this music expecting the old Purple of the 70's. That band is gone! This "New" Purple band is a band of the new century with a new musical perspective that may well put them back in the fore front of the genre as they were thirty years ago, ...putting out the finest music on the planet!!This will be a CD that you will not tire of quickly, and will only cause you to get the other two they have released with Morse, (as I intend to). It is really good to hear such performances in a time when truly great rock music is so difficult to discover.
