Great music although they sound the same
I found out about 12 Stones from a friend, so I downloaded a few of their songs. My instant favorites were "Broken" and "Eric's Song". I liked their music so much that I decided that I'd buy their CD - you know, to support the band.I really like the CD! All of the songs have great, if repetitive, guitar riffs and strong lyrics. I'm glad I spent the money on this CD. I would recommend this to anyone who likes a good, easy rock album.
I gave the album a 4 star rating instead of 5 because although it is good music, the songs do sound the same. I also gave it a lower score because it doesn't give anything new to the world of rock, if you know what I mean.
A great CD, nonetheless.
It's A Great Debut But Can Do Better
When I first saw this video of Broken on MTV. I was taken aback by the metallica type growl that the songs starts of with and after listening to Broken about like 20 times i decided that it would be worth a shot checking out this band and upon downloading their whole album i realised that this was an awesome band with a lot of potential but the only fault seems to be that there are atleast 70 other bands that sound like 12 Stones but the one thing that sets them apart is the diversity in their album. From Crash to Home to Eric's Song their is a lot of diversity shown by this young and relatively immature band from Louisiana. You cant help but wonder why these teens have so much angst and grief within themselves and they havent even passed puberty yet. Dont listen to anybody who tells you this is the best album of all time cause its not but its definitely worth a listen to anybody who loves the combination of heavy guitar riffs with a melodic and sometimes poppish voice. If you like bands like Linkin Park, Blink 182, or maybe even stuff like Metallica's later albums like Load, Reload you'll definitely dig this album.
Generic Hard Rock
For being utterly devoid of originality, this is actually a fairly decent album. While not unique in the slightest, the music is delivered perfectly. The drumming is flawless, as are the guitars, particularly during the several solos that highlight the cd. While vocalist Paul McCoy is no David Draiman or Maynard James Keenan, his voice gets the job done with everything from singing to growling to screaming.
While 12 Stones is, I suppose, considered a Christian rock band, they don't have the lyrical stupidity and lack of seriousness that is detremental to the genre.
Something else I should note: even if you don't particularly care for their music, I encourage you to try to catch 12 Stones live. They put on a damn good show for a thouroughly enjoyable concert experience.
So there you have it, unoriginal but still solid music. Highlights of the album: Soulfire, Broken, Open Your Eyes, My Life
Nicely Done For A New Band
After hearing bands like P.O.D., Pillar, Kutless, etc. 12 Stones brings yet another rock-hard album to the Christian rock kiteen. This album showed what an upcoming band is made of. With the message clearly conveyed and a combination of interesting acoustics, vocals, and lyrics, 12 Stones has proven to be a refreshing new band in the idustry. I didn't rate them 5 stars, however, simply because some of their songs seemed rather familiar with normal, always-heard-of beats and tunes. But Paul McCoy's talent as a vocalist certainly kept this band alive in my mind.
With songs like "Break", "Crash", and "Fade Away" the message is that of keeping a steady mind in a wavering world and focusing on what is important. The fact that God plays the most important role in the music is always a factor.
I wouldn't be surprised to see a follow-up album from the 12 Stones but this album...... I wouldn't classify as a "must get" but if you're into hard-rock, majesticly piercing vocals, and soul diving lyrics, then 12 Stones is definately for you.
THIS CD ROCKS!!
I heard Paul Mccoy off of the single "Bring me to Life" and I loved his voice. I then went out and bought this cd and listen to it whenever I get the chance. They are a great band and put on great concerts. I recently went to one, and it rocked completely. Some bands don't sound the same in concert as on their cds but this band does. He has the same growl in his voice and the music is awesome. I love 12 Stones and can't wait for their next cd to come out. If you like a Christian band that writes all their songs this is the band for you. My favorite songs are "Broken", "The way I feel", and "Soulfire".
It's appropriate that this earnest, young quartet of rockers is signed to the label that squired Creed to multiplatinum superstardom. Like Creed, 12 Stones deliver accessible, middle-of-the-road, postgrunge rock throughout their formulaic debut. Having emerged from the small burg of Mandeville, Louisiana, they serve up songs that tap (albeit at times tritely) into the self-doubt and romantic woes of post-Ritalin teens ("Patiently waiting by the phone / Hoping that you will call me home"). The songs, though, are honest and deeply felt, especially when singer Paul McCoy summons a metallic growl and Eric Weaver's sinuous guitar yields memorable melodies and acute solos. The menacing drums and agitation of "My Life" make it a highlight; ditto the speedy, edgy rocker "Eric's Song" and the passionate "Soulfire." --Katherine Turman
