12 Golden Country Greats Reviews
possibly Ween's best
It's tricky to call an album a band's best when it's so atypical, especially when the typical ones (if any Ween release can be called typical) are so excellent. But I don't think any other Ween album can be said to be better than "12 Golden Country Greats." Put this next to "The Pod" and reel, but even standing alone, this is just an excellent, excellent album.
the mock country album is a nice one
very good stuff. ween proves to be of those bands that you wouldn't think could do country music. but man would you ever be wrong. this is a lovely mellow album right here and the boys play it on the up and up for the most part. which is surprizing. of course we have the classic Piss Up A Rope which is most certainly not on the up and on. lol. that song is the bomb baby :) everything else is really nice. other favs being Powder Blue & Help Me Scrape the Mucus off My Brain. my only complain is i wish it really did have 12 songs on it. i would have like to have seen So Long Jerry put on here and something else i can't think of right now.
A work of uniquely twisted brilliance
This is Ween at their finest. It's simultaneously a parody of and a tribute to country music, mocking mullet-headed wife beaters in "Piss up A Rope" and sending up sad-dog tunes with "Fluffy," while filling every second of every song with great melodies, harmonies, and musicianship. Hiring some of Nashville's finest session players on piano, harmonica, and pedal steel guitar don't, as you might think, make Ween's lyrical quirks stick out as a novelty. Instead it all gels together thanks to the fantastic songwriting -- tracks like "Japanese Cowboy," "I Don't Want To Leave You on the Farm," and "Mister Richard Smoker" are as catchy and tuneful as they come, and could be widely loved classics if they weren't so ... Ween. Biddly-Bah-Boop!! Buy this.

Country melodies
that really stand on their own
(with crazy lyrics).
Dean
My art teacher actually turned me onto this CD after asking me if I ever listened to Ween. Of course I had; "Chocolate and Cheese" back in '99. At first, it sounded like garbage, seeing as I hate country music, but this ... this is something else. Dean and Gene Ween really offer something new, and country has never sounded like this. "Mister Richard Smoker," "Japanese Cowboy" and "Help Me Scrape the Mucus Off My Brain" are classics in their own, and the sound of "Fluffy" is just downright hysterical, which goes to show that these musicians aren't afraid to broaden the musical horizons and put out something different, which to me, is what music is all about.
